No police action – so far – taken against golf course that defied lockdown order

A southern Ontario golf course, that defied the province’s extended stay-at-home order by reopening on the weekend, faced no consequences for its actions… so far. Police were present both Saturday and Sunday at The Bridges at Tillsonburg, but remained quiet while golfers played. Police have declined comment on any specific actions they might take.

Murray McLaughlin, co-owner of the Tillsonburg golf course, said the club wasn’t trying to make a political statement by opening on the weekend, suggesting it was doing what it thought was right.

Meanwhile, Golf Ontario executive director Mike Kelly said golf courses must follow the rules and be “part of the solution.”

In a related story, Dave Deluzio, general manager of Roseland Golf and Curling Club in Windsor, said he “gets” why The Bridges at Tillsonburg defied the provincial mandate, but emphasized the fact that more than 20 million rounds of golf were played in 2020 at Ontario golf courses without a single COVID-related incident.

Meanwhile, at Kitchener’s Deer Ridge Golf Club, members are being asked to book tee times in anticipation of golf’s reopening. The club states, however, that it won’t open before the green light is given by the provincial government. Club manager Rob Moore says it’s unfair if the province does nothing about the Tillsonburg golf course’s illegal opening while courses abiding by the law remain closed.
